Larger than the state of Alaska, this vast, ancient ecosystem absorbs more carbon and produces more oxygen than any other rainforest on Earth. As the Amazon now emits more carbon than it stores, the Congo remains our final stronghold.
But it is vanishing.
Deforestation, illegal mining, bushmeat trade, and desperate survival tactics are tearing it apart. And at the center of it all is the critically endangered Grauer's gorilla—a keystone species, vanishing with its forest home.
